I love how this photograph captures the lovely warm nights on the caribbean coast of Hondurus. As this boat slowly goes sailing by in the gentle breeze, we sat on our jetty sipping beers and swapping travel stories... I also got my advanced open water divers license here. Amazing times and amazing memories...

Penguins as far as the eye can see. King penguins have a unique breeding and rearing cycle. They lay eggs every 13-16 months in the Southern Ocean Summer (November to April) which means at any given time there are babies, adolescents adults and molters all at different stages along the beach and up to the inshore rookery landscape. It's something you never forget seeing

A view from deep in the Zion Narrows. You wade the frigid waters of the Virgin River in a very deep and narrow canyon. Light bounces down the canyon walls creating chances for some great images.

Milky Way to the Eye vs Milky Way to the Camera

I was asked the question of what the Milky way looks like to the eye when I am in the field vs what a final image looks like. This is a good example to what I see vs what the camera can see.

You can see the Milky Way with the eye. It will look like a white cloud in the sky. and the darker it is and the more your eyes are used to the dark, the better you will see it. The big difference is your eyes cannot see as much of the color of it.

The camera can see much more.

My typical exposure (such as this image )is a 25 second exposure. That allows the camera to gather much more light and data to make the image. If you have ever seen the NASA images from the Hubble telescope those are often many hours worth of exposure data, sometimes over several days. Mine are much simpler. Typically 13-25 seconds depending on the lens.

I take the shot and can get a great image in just a few seconds that I can bring back to share.

So in this shot (from the dark skies of Big Bend) when I was standing there in the dark I can see the stars and the Milky Way. I can see the glow on the horizon from the tiny village of Lajitas and I can see the land forms as shadowy shapes. The camera can see the land in detail and can pick up the very faint color in the sky my eyes cannot see. It allows me to "see" a bit more.

Wallagunda River Falls Second plunge and pool, Morton NP

The highland mist cleared for a moment, and the strange rock filters at the top of the second plunge became clear. The river flows, in part, through fragile honeycombed rock connecting pool and plunge.

This is a single handheld shot through afternoon mist. Toned to emphasize structure and output sharpened. The rock walls above the pool are difficult to image: the overhang and different lighting conditions/humidity make each shot different. Here i have not tried to separate the colors by dehazing the drifting mist, preferring simply to let the eye wander the structures.

Tiny but significant

There are so many species of fungi we never see due to their miniscule size, and this is one example of being small.

It's not growing on a log or branch, but at the end of a leaf stalk – the petiole. Once this end was attached to the branch of a tree and now the leaf is being transformed by a various fungi, insects and earthworms so that its components once again can be utilized by plants.

Even though I was lying flat on the ground and using the camera display to zoom in I did not notice the amazing droplets high on the stalk.

Most enjoy the forest as a locale for hiking and being constantly in motion - reaching a destination, and perhaps more interested in getting in shape and discussing topics of interest far from what is around them. Instead one could enjoy all that is around if one just takes a breather - literally. A deep inhale to welcome the life around you, and a deep exhale to thank existence for the life given to us for free.

By doing so you will notice the rhythm of life – the songs of birds from the canopy, butterflies and moths passing by, insects of all shapes and sizes, noticing the sounds of fruits falling to the ground, the rustling of the foliage in the wind.

My locale for this session was amongst the fallen leaves, and I found so many species of fungi I would never have seen if I was walking and in constant motion.

I did find even smaller mushrooms on leaves, but they were so tiny I would need different equipment with much greater magnification to get a good capture.
